laundry area: before and after

I recently discovered pinterest...I know, I am a latecomer, but better late then never.  I love it.  I don't have time to search on it very often but have found some fabulous blogs.  They are so inspirational, simple DIY home improvement projects.  Our house is always in an utter state of chaos.  I long to be organized but really don't know how to go about it.  It doesn't come naturally for me at all.

One area of our house that drives me absolutely crazy is the laundry area.  It is right in the hallway, no hiding any messes here. The top of the dryer is always a disaster, such an eye sore.  It has been my mission to get this area straightened up so it doesn't cause me such anxiety.  I thought this would be a great place to start organizing, since it is small and completely manageable.

The sitter came today which made it a perfect opportunity to go to T.J. Max see if they had what I needed: a jar for the oxiclean (instead of the big ugly box), a cute basket for dirty clothes.  I am actually envisioning some really beautiful colored glass for the oxiclean, but this clear container will work for now.  Maybe eventually I will stumble across what I am looking for.

I told Kekoa about my project, that I wanted to make the dryer look pretty.  He was actually really excited to see the finished product.  He kept checking in with me, "is it done yet mama?"

Voila, here is the finished product.  It feels so good to have a nice, cleaned off area. (and I organized the shelves a bit more)  I absolutely love the basket.  Chevron prints are my fave.  I also added a groovy green cup that I found in an old box to catch any change or rocks or other treasure that is found in pockets.  Did Kekoa approve?  He was wondering where all the stuff was...he likes the stuff!!  Oh no!

As I'm looking at this picture, I am going to take the white basket of spray "stuff" on the shelf, move it and put the laundry soap in that spot.  It will free up even more space.
