Well, it has just taken a few days, but I think Kekoa may have weaned himself. He didn't even ask for "nai nai" tonight before bed. We came out to the couch, after his bath and changing in to pj's, snuggled and read some books. I kept waiting for him to ask, but he didn't. After 3 stories, I carried him into his room to sleep in his "bi boy be" (big boy bed). This is a milestone for us, the first time not nursing at all, the whole day!
Am I sad or am I happy that Kekoa is possibly weaned? I am feeling both, it is a bittersweet feeling. Did I cry a little as I sang him a lullaby in bed? Yes! I have been cherishing the time nursing this past week because I knew it was going to come to an end very soon. Last night he barely nursed at all, just for a few minutes. The night before, it was like we both knew it was going to be the last real time spent nursing. He took his time, played with my hair, reached for my face like he always does. It was all very sweet.
I just feel so fortunate to have been able to nurse Kekoa for this long, 20 months and 2 days! It was sooooo hard when he was a newborn. I still remember the trauma of using the nipple shield and how hard it was to get him to latch on. Funny how I had to force him to nurse in the beginning. Nursing Kekoa for all this time has been amazing. I am so happy I was able to do it for so long, to give him all of those nutrients, and have that special time to bond. I will always remember the way Kekoa would look up at me while he nursed. Now my little monkey is growing up; he has his big boy bed, is getting a booster seat to dine in, and is giving up nursing! I am so proud of him.
