We headed down to Big Sur early Saturday morning to join them. Kekoa was so excited to go camping with "mama, baba, koa and Mlan". (Kekoa doesn't quite say the "i" sound in "Milan" and slurs it all together.) He actually was really sad that "Kaper" wasn't coming too.
It was a foggy drive down the coast. I have never seen it so foggy, pea soup foggy, where we couldn't even see the ocean at all! As we traveled further south, the fog started to lift a little. The campground area was along the river instead of the coast, so it was like a little pocket of welcomed sunshine!
After setting up camp, we headed to windy Pfeiffer State Beach. It was a gorgeous beach. The boys had a blast, digging in the sand, exploring and playing paddle ball. Scott and I went exploring too, climbing over the rocks on the other side of the beach. It was so nice to enjoy a glass of wine on a beautiful beach with great company!
Kekoa all bundled up. The beach was so windy and Kekoa was a little chilly.
Kekoa and Milan have so much fun playing paddle ball with their baba's!
Kekoa counting...how cute!!
We joke that Scott is the "sherpa". Here he is, lugging all our stuff from the beach to the car!
Kekoa is saying "jia yo" (literally translates to "add gas", what we say when we are going up hill or working hard)
Here comes "froggy". I love it when Kekoa calls himself "froggy".
We stopped to check out some horses. Kekoa just wanted to pet them, but the horses were too busy eating!
How tired was Kekoa after a day at the beach? Exhausted...he passed out right away. The road out of the beach is less than 2 miles and Kekoa was passed out before we reached the end of it!
The beautiful redwoods.
Double fisted mama!
Kekoa had so much fun playing in the river, throwing rocks and getting all wet. We played down by the creek with the kiddos while Scott got the BBQ going at the campsite. We were all hungry and couldn't wait for the turkey burgers and turkey hot dogs. Yum!
Kekoa loved climbing on this rock and then "sliding" down (it was like a 2 inch drop). He kept doing it over and over again and was so proud of himself!
These two were adorable, so fascinated with the big red cups, filled with water.
Who's got the biggest belly after dinner?
Kekoa does! He ate SO much, 2 turkey hotdogs, mac and cheese, broccoli, and carrots. He just kept eating and eating and eating!
These two boys really had the best time with each other. They couldn't stop laughing, holding hands and peeking in on each other while they were in the tents. It was so funny to watch Milan, lifting our tent flap to peek in on Kekoa. They both thought it was the funniest thing ever.
Kekoa loved being in the tent but not so much sleeping in it without his mama and baba. After over 45 minutes of trying to get him to sleep, I brought him out of the tent and he snuggled in my lap, watching the fire, until he fell asleep in my arms. He loved being able to stay up and staring into the fire. He didn't like it when I sat by the fire to roast a marshmallow...didn't like having me so close to the fire!
The next morning, after packing up, we headed to Big Sur Bakery. On the way there, we saw a California condor. The condor is a humungous bird with a 9 foot wingspan and an endangered bird. At one point there were only 27 left in the world!! I have never seen one in the wild and this one flew over our car like it could take off with it. I felt like I could reach out and touch it. Kekoa kept saying, "mama saw it, big bird, baba driving" (Scott was driving and I had my head out the window). It was amazing.
We stopped in for coffee and treats at the bakery. There is a really neat gallery next door that we checked out. There were all kinds of cool succulents and nice shady places to sit. After relaxing at the gallery for a bit, we tried to get into the Post Ranch Inn for a drink, but we were denied. :( It is a super super nice place to stay and super super expensive. They were only letting guests in.
We decided we should head back home...we had a cranky toddler that was telling us it was time! Kekoa was super tired and crashed out after about 5 minutes of driving. We had the best time and can't wait to take Kekoa tent camping again! He did awesome!
My vanilla latte was almost too pretty to drink...almost! :)
The little gallery next door to the bakery was really cool. It was a nice place to sit and chat. I kept trying to get a picture of the two boys together, but it was impossible...they were on the go, so much to explore and so many rocks to play with!
Scott and I were so excited to stop at Phil's, in Moss Landing, on the way home, for lunch. We haven't been here since before Kekoa was born and it is one of our favorite places to eat. Their clam chowder bread bowl is soooo good. After lunch, we headed down the road to show Kekoa all the sea lions. He didn't want to leave, but I was eager to get back into the sunshine!
