My first week home

Everyday Scott and I are learning new things about Kekoa and about how to make our lives as easy and convenient as possible right now. I have post-it notes written all over the house to help me remember what I need. I thought pregnancy brain was bad, but mommy brain is even worse! I can't remember anything!!!
Scott, of course, is just so amazing and supportive. He has been running errands during the day of things that we need. He makes sure that all my waters (that are strategically placed around the apartment) are filled at all times. Snack patrol is also something he is in charge of. I still can't believe how hungry nursing makes me. I have to continually snack and eat. Scott preps my next snack to make it really easy for me. I'm even too hungry to open a tupperware, put the food in a bowl, and into the microwave. Scott has it all ready for me to microwave. All the little minutes add up to precious nap time.
Yesterday was the first day I was actually able to nap during the day. I took 3 naps! Woo hoo! I've been just going, going, going, during the day...which doesn't work in too well to the long night feedings! Auntie Kim came over yesterday, went to Costco and Longs for us, helped me prep chicken soup for the slow cooker, brought over homemade pasta salad and potato salad, AND cleaned our bathroom!! Thank you so much Auntie Kim!! :)
Our friends Gary and Peter came over as well. They brought us delicious homemade chicken soup (which I quickly devoured while they were visiting), organic veggies, and cute little baby clothes and a soft, snuggly car blanket.
Auntie Cassie continues her role as my fairy godmother...making sure we have dinner every night, doing laundry for us, and watering my plants on the porch daily. She is definitely keeping Scott and I well fed. We can't wait to return this good Karma for someone else in the future. We are just sooooo lucky and fortunate to have a fairy godmother live right next door! :)
Today we have our 2nd doctor's appointment. Kekoa looks like he is getting chubbier to us. His cheeks are getting fuller and he is getting some meat on his bones. Scott and I are both keeping our fingers crossed.

Settling In...

What a crazy week this has been so far! Knock on wood, but it seems every day gets a little more routine and less hectic. By the time we figure out this feeding schedule, I'm sure it will change! It is just all so worth it though. Kekoa cracks us up with all his little faces and noises. His nickname is "chirp chirp" because while he sleeps, he randomly will make a chirping noise like a little bird. It is so cute!
Kekoa eats about every 2 hours. He is a very vigorous eater. We also had his first doctor's appointment. Scott and I really like our pediatrician. She wanted us to go to a Weigh and Feed, this week. We went to Good Samaritan Hospital and did just that. We weigh Kekoa before he is fed. Then he nurses and we weigh him again. We all want to know about how much milk he is getting. After feeding, Kekoa was back up to his birth weight of 7 pounds! Yeah! The pediatrician is also very happy about that.
The Weigh and Feed is actually a breast feeding support group. It is in the auditorium, it is free, and there are fabulous lactation consultants there to help you and answer any questions. It is a really special feeling to have all these moms there, sitting around, talking, and nursing in a very safe and welcoming environment.
Kekoa's next appointment is Monday and then we have an appointment with a lactation consultant. It will be a one on one session for an hour. I would like to get more confident trying other nursing holds and to get Kekoa off the "nipple shield". He needs to use it right now to help him latch on correctly. The lactation consultant at Good Samaritan (one of the best in the Bay Area) gave me more confidence and said that Kekoa will eventually be able to latch without the nipple shield. She made me feel better that there was nothing wrong. And come to find out, many of my friends and other woman at the Weigh and Feed had to use the nipple shield too, some for even 3 months!! I now don't feel like such a freak of nature.
Scott and I are just enjoying every second we can with our little guy. It is crazy how much he has already changed. When I flip through my camera at all the photos, I am so surprised at the changes! I love how snuggly he is right now and how I can nuzzle him perfectly into my shoulder. He is so sweet and really only fusses when he is hungry. I enjoy every feeding with him, even the late night ones. This is such a special time for all of us as a family.
Scott is just a wonderful support. He comes and gets Kekoa after he nurses, changes his diaper, and then Kekoa usually wants more milk, so he brings him back to me. When I need to pump, Scott takes care of the bottles, bags up the milk, and gets the pump all set up for me. He gives me massages, which my shoulders, arms, and legs need due to all this nursing. He brings me food, so I can eat while I'm nursing. (In case you didn't know, breast feeding makes you ravenous. I've never been this hungry in my life...not even when I was training for my marathon and running 50 miles a week! If Kekoa is having a hard time getting to sleep, Scott will rock him, sing to him, and chant "Ohm"...which really soothes him and gets Kekoa to calm down. It is so cool because Scott used to chant Ohm when Kekoa was in my belly and it had the same affect on him!
Scott and I are a great team! Kekoa is so lucky to have such an amazing dad and I am extremely lucky to have the best husband ever!
Yesterday we had 2 visitors. Auntie Kim, who brought me delicious peaches and homemade cookies. Yummy! And Auntie Mary, who brought a delicious pan of gooey, cheesy, veggie/meat lasagna. It was all warm and everything! Because they were here, I was able to get some me time...shower and stretch....simple things. It was so nice outside and I haven't been outside. I took the opportunity to stretch on the porch and watch the clouds go by. I ate my lasagna on the porch and watched the hummingbirds feed at our hummingbird feeding, the ducks fly by, and just enjoyed the outside air. I was able to do some yoga on the porch on it felt so good to stretch all my muscles out. Crazy how much easier yoga is now that I don't have a 7 pound baby in my belly. I mean, wow, I can touch my toes again and actually take deep breaths! And I have my balance back!
Auntie Cassie made us dinner last night. She is an amazing cook, I wish I had been taking pictures of all the wonderful meals she has made us! Last night was chicken, butternut squash, and couscous...YUM! For dessert, strawberry shortcake on angel food cake with some yummy lemony sauce on it!! She is also helping me water my plants outside, does laundry for us, and offers to get groceries. What a great support!
Another great support has been my dad and Jenny. We stayed overnight on Monday after the doctor's visit. Jenny is amazing and I finally got some much needed rest. She went to Target for me, did laundry, cooked, changed diapers, changed clothes, pretty much everything and anything I needed. Scott and I are so grateful for both my dad's and Jenny's help and support! It is such a wonderful feeling to know you have someone you can rely on in this rewarding, but challenging time in our lives. Kaiwei is just adorable too and very interested in Kekoa. He is almost one now and of course loves to play with loud toys. We have to remember to turn then all off or the baby wakes up!
Today we have another outing. It is quiet hilarious to see us try to get out of the house. This was already challenging for me without a baby! Monday was a big learning lesson, since we forgot so many important things (not the breast pump backpack, but ALL the parts to actually pump. thank goodness Jenny had a pump at the house, or I would've been in trouble!). We are going to Auntie Betty's house for a big party, who has know me since almost birth. Her kids, who are more like my cousins, and my brother and I all grew up together. We are all about the same age and now we all have kids at the same time! It will be really special and I will definitely have some pictures up soon.

Quiet Please!!

Can't you see I'm trying to sleep....

Finally...I can get in some zzzzzzz's!

We made it through the night...now our first day home as a family!

Hi Auntie Cassie! Thank you for taking such good care of my parents! They really appreciate it!Not really digging my first sponge bath mommy!

Getting a little better.....After bath bliss....

Play time with mommy on my first day home!
We all made it through the first night...boy are we tired!!

Daddy loves my mohawk!(Wrote this one too, during the first day, but just posting now! )
What fun it is to have a baby in the house! All day long this little man has made us laugh and just be in utter amazement of how much more spectacular our lives are now with him! He had his first sponge bath today, with the help of Auntie Cassie and Hailey (our wonderful next door neighbors). Of course while Kekoa didn't have on his diaper, he decides to have a big poop!! He smells even better now and is sleeping beside me in his little moses basket.
Scott and I have had so much fun playing with him today too. We have this fun little mirror. While he was laying on the blanket, we brought it up to him, and he made a little cooing noise to his reflection. Kekoa looks at me with these eyes filled with love and complete trust. It makes me heart just melt.
It amazes me that he recognizes our voices. Whenever we would visit him in the Special Care Nursery, the nurses would say, "Wow, he just instantly relaxes when you guys are in here, talking to him." He recognizes songs that we would sing to him and stories that we would read!

First night home

My first photo at home! Isn't my moses basket cute?Daddy in complete awe of me!
The morning after....Look at me, I'm home with my mommy and daddy!
Asleep again...
(I typed this right after the first night, but it has taken awhile to publish! :)
Our first night with baby Kekoa was filled with lots of laughter, amazement, a breakdown (me of course), and just bliss. After not having Kekoa for so long, neither Scott and I are going to complain about anything of the craziness of the first night home with your newborn baby. Of course there isn't going to be any sleep going on, but that is all good because he is home with us. Kekoa is just so darn cute. He also likes to snort, so cute, so cute, so cute.
I am officially a cow now. My milk came in with a vengence in a about a day and half. My mom has been making me Chinese soups that definitely bring in your milk. The nurses couldn't believe I had that much so soon. It was a relief, because then Kekoa only had to have a little bit of formula while in the Special Care Nursery. All I am doing is pumping and feeding, pumping and feeding. Kekoa learned how to nurse last night!!! It is so amazing, considering just in the morning, in the Special Care Nursery he was having a hard time feeding with a bottle. He got a late start feeding too, since he was in there so soon after birth. On Friday night the lactation consultant had said he was a confused sucker and now he is nursing! He is a warrior, like the meaning of his name.
Just overnight his cheeks have filled in and he has changed so much. Scott is the most amazing husband and dad. We are such a great team and could not have made it through the night without each other's help. He would change diapers while I would pump between feedings. He would wash bottles and get my next set of pumping ready, while I was nursing Kekoa. He is like my boxing trainer, bringing me my water cup while I'm nursing or pumping with a straw, so I can be hydrated. Sometimes we would have to supplement with a bottle because he screams when he is hungry. Kekoa goes from Mr. Cutest Baby on the Planet to screaming bloody murder in 0.1 seconds. He can't get the milk in fast enough. We would give him a little in a bottle to satisfy him so I could try and get him on the breast, or he would just be too upset. At one point, I was giving him a little of the bottle and he grabbed my wrist with both hands and pulled my hand closer. It was so funny. Throughout the course of the night, he got better and better at nursing. We did get through "the first night" and look forward to our first day home with our new little man, Kekoa Kai Hanson.
